Whether it is worth it depends on your rent saving against your travel cost and time, and on how often you really cross. Today the median asking rent for a condo on this site is RM 2,000 a month, and rent is paid in ringgit while a Singapore salary is in Singapore dollars. Add up the rent, utilities, transport, tolls or fares and the time spent, then compare with living in Singapore. This page lists what to compare; it does not say which choice is better for you.

What to compare

  • Rent and the initial payment (deposits, advance rent, fees) for a home near your crossing.
  • Travel: car, bus, motorbike or rail; fuel, tolls or fares, parking, and the time at your own travel hours, including queues at the checkpoint.
  • Currency: rent and bills are in ringgit and your pay is in Singapore dollars, so the exchange rate affects your real cost.
  • Remote or hybrid days: if you work from home some days, check internet speed and a quiet space, and whether the home has the work setup you need.
  • Furnishing and tenancy length: fully furnished units suit short stays; check the break clause and renewal terms.
  • Your employer's and the immigration rules about living in one country and working in another; ask your employer if unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Is renting in Johor Bahru cheaper than renting in Singapore?

Rents in ringgit are usually lower in Johor Bahru, but you then pay for travel and time. The median asking condo rent on this site today is RM 2,000 a month.

Can I rent a furnished home for a short period?

Many landlords offer furnished units; the minimum term and the break clause are set in the tenancy agreement, so ask before you commit.

Sources and method

Figures come from the property listings published on benfooproperty.com on 7 November 2026, refreshed daily. They are asking prices and asking rents set by owners, not sale prices, and medians are used so a few very high or low prices do not distort the result. Loan examples use the stated assumptions and are not a bank offer. Written and reviewed by Ben Foo, registered estate negotiator (REN 33376), PropNex Realty Sdn.
